Detrimental effects of sand ingression in jet engine ceramic coatings captured with Raman-based 3D rendering

The infiltration of molten calcium, magnesium, and alumino-silicates (CMAS) into jet engine thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) causes an increased stiffness a destructive phase destabilization eventually leading to thermomechanical failure. Using 3D confocal Raman spectroscopy, the extent thermochemical degradation was identified by mapping monoclinic volume fraction (mPVF) throughout standard EB-PVD 7YSZ TBC coating. mPVF is characterized as function depth time with microscale resolution. Results show that most intense along column's perimeter whereas core column retained its original phase. greatest amount occurs within first hour interaction after which average minimum 32 %. This value increases 42 % ten-fold increase in time. ability quantitatively non-destructively characterize CMAS infiltrated TBCs will accelerate development resistant coatings.
